Boy + Girl Twin Nursery

It’s time for another nursery reveal and let me tell you, this nursery was the hardest puzzle I’ve had to solve. I agonized over how to make it all work. The twins were going into our NYC apartment’s office/guestroom. To make room for them, we sent our china cabinet out to the house (now used as a media stand in our basement playroom), and my desk was moved out into the living room in place of the china cabinet. Michael accepted that he wouldn’t be doing any bike rides in Central park anytime soon so his triathlon bikes also went out to the house.

In the new twin nursery, we shifted the location of the bed over so the twins’ cribs could go side-by-side on the longest wall in the room, and then the girls’ double-wide changing table dresser combo was moved in where the desk used to be.

Shortly after I found out that twins were on the way, the nursery store Giggle announced it would be closing. I spent a couple weeks heading to their closing sales all over NYC so I could grab items at a discount, and on my first day at the sale all of my glider chair dreams came true. They were selling their floor model of the Monte Como Glider! I used to sit in this glider every single time I visited this store. It is the most comfortable thing I have ever sat on! It is also pricey, but I had no qualms about grabbing this discounted floor model. They also had the ottoman new in its box for 40% off so I grabbed that too.

Now it was time to choose the cribs. I went back and forth and back and forth on getting mini cribs vs full-sized cribs. I agonized over this decision. This room is much smaller than the room our daughters share, and I needed to keep the full-size bed in the room because my mother was coming to stay with us for a few months. We knew I was going to be on full bed rest fairly early in the pregnancy since I was carrying twins (and I went on bed rest at 32 and 34 weeks with my prior pregnancies), and there was no way to predict how long the twins would be in the hospital after their birth. Spoiler alert: I was on bed rest for 10 weeks, had the twins at 33 weeks, and they stayed in the NICU for 3 and 4 weeks. Plus, we knew my recovery was going to be tough since it was most likely going to be a C-Section so having a comfortable space for my mother was crucial.

Back to the nursery, the longest wall on that room measured about 106” long, and there just wasn’t going to be a full-sized crib that was going to fit alongside each other. I felt like I searched to the end of the internet trying to find one that actually was 53” wide, but really they are mostly all around 54”. So now onto to the mini crib dilemma: I really wanted a convertible crib option so that it could either become a toddler bed or twin headboard in the future. I was about to be a mother of four kids so I needed to start being practical!

I searched and search, posted in mom groups, had tons of conversations, and then I found Bloom and its Alma Papa Crib! This beauty of a crib checked all of the boxes. With its European sized crib measurements, each crib is 49” wide which means they could both fit on the wall while being big enough to have some longevity, unlike the mini cribs I had been looking at. It even left me some space to add a thin laundry hamper. The fact that these cribs come on wheels and fold for easy transport were awesome extras. The Alma Papa cribs also convert to toddler beds so I knew this was what I needed. The problem was the price. These cribs are not cheap, but I also felt like this was my only option. In the end, I purchased them during their holiday sale, and it turned out that they also offer an awesome twin discount so I ended up getting the cribs for around $420 each.

For the room design, I settled on an “I Love You to the Moon and Back” theme which was inspired by a metal sign that our summertime nanny (hi Julia!) had gifted us from Jimmy Don’s metal sign shop in Waco, TX. A star garland hangs above their cribs along with custom animal and stars prints from an Etsy artist I have always loved.

You may recall from my previous nursery posts that Layla has the light pink Harper pillow and blanket while Cecilia has the bright pink. I grabbed them again in lilac and navy for Zelda and Sam, and I thinks the pops of color work beautifually together.

I found this awesome moon shaped bookshelf which I styled with Funko Pop figures of Sam I Am (who Layla named our Sam after) and Princess Zelda along with that first ultrasound photo that gave us the biggest shock of our lives!

A star duvet cover brings the theme to front and center of this room. And though you can’t see it here, the changing table is directly across from the bed with our glider in the corner beside it.
